Second Grade Reading
Instructor: Mrs. Samantha DuKavas
At Highland Elementary, we use Every Child A Reader (ECAR).  It uses a demonstrated (whole group), differentiated (small group, teacher led), and directed (independent) approach to teach students reading.

Demonstrated reading will be our whole group lesson which uses one poem for five days to help students learn different aspects of literacy including predictions, vocabulary, inferences, graphic organizers, and character details.

ECAR uses a small group approach.  Students will rotate through stations which will include a station with me (differentiated instruction), directed (independent work), a center, and fluency (silent reading).  In the differentiated group, I will teach students specific targets or goals that they need.  Then they will continue that work in the directed (independent) portion of the stations.   Examples of phonics targets are silent e words (lime, tale), vowel pairs (ae, ee, oa, ea), digraphs (wh, ch, th) and blends (br, tr, st).  Examples of comprehension targets are describing character, describing setting, identifying nonfiction elements, naming the topic and details, and making inferences.

Our center will include literacy based activities.  These will be a range of things such as games (bingo, matching, I Have, Who Has, Scrabble), creative writing prompts, or doing word sorts.  We also have 6 iPads in our classroom that were purchased through a grant and by the Highland PTO; students use learning apps to reinforce our reading and writing programs.
